Blue Devils on a Roll!
The Blue Devils have started the playoffs with a bang, recording 3 wins in their first 3 games.

The playoffs started for the BDs last Saturday morning against Cayuga. The game remained scoreless until just past halfway through the first period, when high-scoring Jakob Kubisch found the back of the net off a great pass from thundering defenceman Luke Pain. Entering the 2nd period with a 1-0 lead, Ethan Ferreira quicky extended the lead (assisted by Owen Clarke), and quickly after that the best two-position player in Haldimand County PW LL, Dustin Hine, scored a goal in his first game as a forward, on a wickedly-awesome pass from Johnny Dangles himself, Ty Mac. Yes, Dusty was playing forward meaning that the defencemen were on a challenging 3-man rotation. Think they were tired? Yes! Think they slowed down? Heck no! Almost immediately after Dusty's goal, Luke Pain ripped a slapper from the blue line (assisted by the great pair of Kubisch and Ferreira), and finally found the back of the net! The BDs entered the 3rd period with a commanding 4-0 lead.  Early in the 3rd, Owen Clarke scored a great one, assisted by the point-seeking Hine. Halfway through the 3rd, the scoresheet registered Nicholas Clark with his first, unassisted goal of the season. This was even more incredible, as Clark was absent from the game! This goal was actually scored by Kubisch.....but the OMHA will always have Clark recorded as the goal scorer until the end of time. Finally, late in the 3rd period, Kubisch completed the hattie with a final, unassisted goal. The BDs emerged victorious from this game, undoubtedly dominating the Stars, with a final score of 7-1.

The next afternoon saw the BDs face off against the #1 PW3 team. These games are always fun, fairly  clean and very intense. Nothing beats a good, old-fashioned town rivalry! This was a quick game, with two evenly-matched teams, and the BD fans were treated to a fast, controlled battle that remained scoreless through the first. Fairly quickly into the 2nd period, Dustin Hine capitalized on a puck in front of the PW3 net, and poked it through the PW3 netminder's five hole to score his 2nd goal in as many games as a forward.....yikes! Will we ever convince him to return to defence?!? The BDs remained in control of the game, with strong defence, great goaltending and fantastic teamwork, and entered the 3rd period with a narrow 1-0 lead. The BD fans were kept on the edge of their seat during a fast-paced and entertaining 3rd period, and thankfully Jakob Kubisch solidified the win, adding an unassisted goal late in the 3rd period. The BDs held on for a 2-0 win, and left the weekend with two solid wins under their belts.

Thursday night the BDs completed their home-home series with the Cayuga Stars. Hopes were high for another solid win! The fans were nervous, though....the BDs seemed a bit discombobulated during warm-up, extra equipment was called in, missing water bottles everywhere...thank goodness the BD coaches had things in control and kept the BDs focused and intense! Scoring opened early in the 1st period with another booming slapshot from the blue line by Luke Pain (assisted by Owen Clarke and Michael Swayze). A few minutes later, Ethan Ferreira scored a beauty, with an outstanding pass from Jakob Kubisch - showing that he has the hands to score AND to assist! Just over a minute later, Chase Peart snuck a quick shot past the Cayuga netminder, assisted by Drew Pardy and Ty Mac. The BDs entered the 2nd period with a commanding 3-0 lead. Very early in the 2nd, Kubisch found the net himself, off of an incredible pass from Nicholas Clark (also assisted by Ferreira). Clark's assist was the highlight of the game, as his BD teammates piled off the bench to surround him with congratulatory high fives and typical hockey player butt slaps and stick smacks. What a great team! Then, less than 2 minutes later, Owen Clarke scored from an impossible angle (and pretty much off of his backside) from forward Michael Swayze and "yes, he's back on defence" Dustin Hine. The BDs held onto the 5-0 lead through the remainder of the 2nd period and the entire 3rd period to end with the 5-0 victory.

This BD team hardly allowed a shot in the past 3 games, and when they did goalie superstar Jakob Bruton-Smith came up big time....and the BDs managed to outscore their opponents 14-1. The team fought hard to help Bruton-Smith record a whopping TWO shutouts in three games - a statistic that many an NHL goalie would envy! The teamwork exhibited by this group over the last 3 games has been remarkable, and keeps the BD fans excited for the next time they will see their team in action.

The BDs will take a break from playoff action this weekend as they head to the Acton LL tournament. Fun times will be had by all, I'm sure. I know I, for one, am hoping for a hospital-free weekend filled with good food and good people. See y'all next week!
