Riptide Keep Improving as the Season Rolls Along...
The Riptide posted another two points this weekend with a big win over hometown rivals, Swarm, and lost a close and hard-fought battle against Hagersville 8.

On Thursday evening, the Riptide faithful rolled into the Hagersville arena to catch their Tide facing off against the tough, quick and strong Hagersville 8.

The first period remained scoreless until the Hawks got on the board late in the period. However, the Tide quickly responded with a goal from power forward Brenhyn Gavey less than two minutes later (assisted by Dustin Hine and Grayson Kinden).  The first period ended in a 1-1 draw.

The second period saw the Hawks get on the board again quickly, and then five minutes later to take a quick 3-1 lead. Again, the Tide responded with a Jakob Kubisch goal, fed by Isaak Fisher and Tyler Dinya. The fans were ecstatic as the period ended with the Tide down 3-2....but with momentum on their side. The crowd was wild!

The third period started with a frenzy of activity....thirty seconds in, Hine broke free from the defense and took the puck almost end-to-end, scoring easily as he "deked out the goalie" (a direct quote)....assisted by Gavey and Dinya. With the game tied from the "super" play of the Tide, the electricity from the crowd was palpable. The Hawks did their best to quiet the crowd by scoring a minute later, but to no avail. However, the hometown Hawks went up by another goal two minutes later, and time was running out. Never fear, Tide faithful, Kubisch found the back of the net once again while on the power play (assisted by Drew Pardy and Zack Hall), and the crowd entered its frenzied state once again. With the clock ticking, goalie Chris Chmiel was pulled but in the ensuing chaos the Tide wound up with 7 players on the ice (not 6.....ooops), and Chmiel headed back to the net to wait out the penalty kill. Here is where the Tide's roll came to a halt, and they could not rally on the penalty kill to score one short-handed. The Tide left the building with a 5-4 loss, but the crowd was ecstatic with the level of play their team exhibited on the ice. What a rush!

The Tide were next in action on Sunday evening against hometown rival Swarm. The first period started with a bang, as Jakob Kubisch scored less than 30 seconds into the game. However, the Swarm proved to be quite a handful for the Tide through the first period, equalizing the score halfway through the period. The period ended in a 1-1 tie.

The second period was scoreless, with a lot of neutral zone play and a little too much "aggressive stick work" for the Tide faithful. Tempers were starting to flare on the ice, and it was an indication of things to come....

Early in the third period Alex Chmiel, who is on a scoring streak, found the back of the net (unassisted....probably because the referees didn't really even know it was in the net until they found it buried in there at the end of the play).  Less than five minutes later, Brenhyn Gavey scored on a great feed from Kubisch and Zack Hall. The Tide were enjoying their 3-1 lead until things got a little dicey late in the period.  A bit of a skirmish started behind the net, but thankfully the referee had matters well in hand. Who knew that referee training included MMA secret moves?!? The good news is that cooler heads prevailed, and the game ended without further incident.

Of note this weekend was the spectacular play of defenseman-turned forward-turned defenseman Zack Hall. It was a pleasure to watch him on defense, and what a great teammate to fill in where needed.

The Tide are next in action on Friday night against Caledonia rivals B1.

Go Tide!
