December 10, 2023The Caledonia Thunder U13 Team 1 showcased their resilience and skill at the Regional Silver Stick Tournament in Collingwood, delivering an exhilarating performance from December 8th to 10th that will be etched in the memories of the players and their families.
The tournament kicked off on Friday with a face-off against the formidable Collingwood Junior Blues. In a rough and penalty-laden game, the Thunder faced a tough 4-1 loss. Undeterred, the team rallied later that evening against the Midland Centennials, delivering a stellar offensive display resulting in a 5-2 victory. Saturday marked the culmination of the round-robin stage, with the Thunder taking on the Pelham Panthers. The Thunder exhibited their prowess once again with a 6-3 win, securing a spot in the semi-finals later that evening. The semi-final clash against the formidable Owen Sound Attack was a true test of character. Despite trailing, the Caledonia Thunder staged a remarkable comeback, tying the game and eventually clinching victory in 3 on 3 overtime. In the highly anticipated finals, the Thunder faced the undefeated Listowel Cyclones, a team that had allowed only two goals in their previous four games. The game unfolded as a showcase of offensive prowess and strategic defense, with Caledonia Thunder's strong defensive lineup and goaltending successfully thwarting the Cyclones' goal-scoring attempts. The teams remained deadlocked until the third period when the Thunder pulled ahead with a crucial goal. Facing adversity with two players in the penalty box during the last 5 minutes, the Thunder showcased their defensive prowess, maintaining a solid 5 on 3. Listowel, desperate to equalize, pulled their goalie, creating a nail-biting moment. However, Caledonia seized the opportunity and scored an empty-net goal, securing a triumphant victory. The coaching staff commended the team's tenacity, stating, "Our players showed remarkable composure and skill throughout the tournament. The strength they demonstrated, especially in overcoming challenges during critical moments, speaks volumes about their character and teamwork. The Caledonia Thunder U13 Team Grey’s victory at the Regional Silver Stick Tournament is not only a testament to their skill on the ice but also a testament to the camaraderie and determination that define the spirit of hockey in Caledonia.
As the team basks in the glory of this hard-fought triumph, they eagerly anticipate representing Caledonia at the National Silver Stick in January, held in Pelham, Ontario.
We’re so proud of you all!!!
